An Enigma

"SELDOM we find," says Solomon Don Dunce,

"Half an idea in the profoundest sonnet.

Through all the flimsy things we see at once

As easily as through a Naples bonnet —

Trash of all trash! — how can a lady don it?

Yet heavier far than your Petrarchan stuff —

Owl-downy nonsense that the faintest puff

Twirls into trunk-paper the while you con it."

The general Petrarchanities are arrant

Bubbles — ephemeral and so transparent —

But this is, now, — you may depend upon it —

Stable, opaque, immortal — all by dint

Of the dear names that lie concealed within 't.

塔克曼式的詩行②完全是肥皂泡泡——

水上蜉蝣，朝生暮死，那么透明——

但眼前這首詩，你完全可以相信——

日月經天，江河行地，玄妙無窮——

因為那可愛的名字就隱藏在其中。③

①“彼特拉克式的廢話”指蹩腳詩人寫得十四行詩。彼特拉克（1304—1374），義大利學者，以其十四行詩著聞名於世。

②暗諷受義大利十四行詩風格影響的波士頓詩人亨利·T·塔克曼（1813—1871）。他於1845年在《民主評論》上發表了一組“輕飄飄的十四行詩”，愛倫·坡對這個詩人和他的詩都不喜歡。

③該首十四行詩以《贈——情人節的禮物》的方式（由詩中每行選一個字母拼合而成，第1行選第1個字母“S”，第2行第2個字母“a”……第14行第14字母“r”）嵌入了Sarah Anna Lewis這個名字，莎拉·安娜·路易斯是個女詩人，愛倫·坡曾替她修改詩，她也資助過愛倫·坡夫婦。
