Magnetism is an age-old and important branch of learning in which our understanding has been steadily progressing.This book is based on the lecture notes of three French physicists:Drs.B.Barbara,D.Gignoux and C.Vettier of the well-known Laboratoire Louis Néel in Grenoble of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique(CNRS),The three scientists delivered lectures on modern magnetism in Beijing in the summer of 1979.The bookconsists of 14 chapters which are concerned with magnetic ordering and molecular field theory,magnetic excitation,4f magnetism and 3d magnetism,the Stoner model,magnetic domains,domain walls and magnetic bubbles.Intermediate valency in 4f systems and magnetic phase transitionsare also discussed.

Giving a systematic and comprehensive presentation of the physical basis of modern magnetism,this book will be useful to researchers and engineers as well as teachers and students of universities and colleges engaged in research and applications in the fields of magnetism and magnetic materials.
