創作背景

歌曲在紐約哈萊姆區的一處錄音室開始錄製，而在美國格林尼治鎮的Electric Lady錄音室完成錄製。歌曲是艾麗西亞·凱斯對母親的情感抒發。她認為每首歌曲背後都有某個人或某件事，使人想去唱它、去感受它。她深愛她的母親，但有好幾次希望母親能夠離她遠一點。她想表達的就是這種質樸的情感。她認為當真正在乎一個人的時候，這是種很自然的感受，即便那個人是自己的母親。此外她表示，這首歌曲同時關於一段難以理清的關係。
