佛烈到印尼一小島尋找石油，途中遇偷渡客積斯高與沉船獲救的戴安。戴安被士人捉去祭神，原來士人膜拜的金剛是一頭身高十丈的大猩猩。金剛對戴安起了憐惜之心，但佛烈卻將金剛迷倒，送到紐約展覽。金剛醒來卻找尋戴安，大鬧了一番紐約城。

1976年，約翰·吉爾勒明耗費相當於當今6500萬美元巨資翻拍的《金剛》，除了將金剛大戰戰機的場景從帝國大廈搬到在“9·11”中被覆滅的“世貿雙子”外，其它故事發展和場景設定幾乎與原版相同，但是，這部使用了當時最為先進的電影特技的《金剛》被觀眾斥為“簡單的幻想片”，與原版的《金剛》完全沒可比之處，這或許是觀眾對原版《金剛》愛護有加的表現之一吧。
