AtacemeteryontheItalianRiviera,filmwriteranddirectorHarryDawesattendsthefuneralofCountessTorlato-Favrini,knowntotheworldasfilmstarMariaD'Amata.Harryremembershowtheymetwhenhewasarecoveringalcoholicandhadbeensignedbyruthless,WallStreetfinancierKirkEdwardstowriteanddirectEdwards'firstventureintofilmproduction:InthecompanyofEdwards,histhengirlfriendMyrnaandEdwards'obsequiouspressagentOscarMuldoon,HarryvisitsanightclubinMadrid,Spain,insearchofanewactresstostarintheirfilm.Aftertheyseethebeautiful,sensualMariaVargasdance,Muldoonisdispatchedtobringhertotheirtable,butMariadeclinestheinvitation,statingthatshedoesnotdallywiththeclub'sclientele.EdwardsthenthreatenstocanceltheproductionunlessHarrypersuadeshertochangehermind.MariaisunwillingtocooperateuntilHarrymentionshisname,whichsherecognizesandrespectsfromfilmsshehasseen,andagreestomeetEdwards.Aftertheunctuous,constantlyperspiringMuldoontellsMariathattheywanthertoshootascreentestinRome,Mariaexcusesherselftomakeaphonecall.WhenHarrydiscoversthatshehaslefttheclub,EdwardstellshimthatheandMuldoonwillbeleavinginhisprivateplaneinanhourandordersHarrytobringMariatotheplaneornotcomeatall.HarrytracesMariatoherparents'home,whereshetellshimaboutherimpoverishedchildhoodduringthecivilwarandhowsheoftenhadnoshoes,henceherchoicetogobarefootstillonoccasion.ShealsotellsHarrythatshehatesherviragoofamother.AfterMaria'sverysuccessfulscreentest,HarrytellsEdwards,whomMariadoesnotlike,thatshewillworkonlywithhimasherdirector,althoughnocontractexistsbetweenthem.Backattherain-drenchedfuneral,infrontofastatueofthebarefootMaria,Muldoonremembershowshe,nowMariaD'Amata,cameunescortedtothepremiereofherfirstfilm:Later,whileinLondontoarrangethefilm'sBritishopening,MuldoonlearnsthatMaria'sfatherhasmurderedhermotherandisconcernedthatthepublicitycouldruinhercareer.Maria,however,returnstoSpainanddeliversanimpassioneddefenseofherfather,whoisacquitted.Becauseofherhonestyandhumanity,Mariabecomesabiggerstarthanbefore.TwoyearslaterinHollywood,EdwardshostsapartytoimpressSouthAmericanmillionaireAlbertoBravano,wholustsafterMaria,whomEdwardsregardsashispersonalproperty,althoughshestillactivelydislikeshim.MariatellsHarrythatsheisgratefulforthethreefilmstheyhavemadetogetherbutisnothappyandyearnstoreturntoMadrid.AfterBravanoinvitesMariatotraveltotheRivierawithhim,Edwardsforbidshertogo,butsheleaveswithBravanoanyway.Muldoon,evertheopportunist,quitsEdwardsandjoinsBravano.HerelateshowBravanonevergotclosetoMaria,butappearedcontentedjusttohavetheworldassumethattheywerelovers.BravanoandMariabecomepartofthe"InternationalSet"ontheFrenchRiviera,althoughshehasnointerestintheirinconsequentialactivities.Onenight,atacasino,BravanopubliclyaccusesMariaofhavingbrokenhisluckystreakatthegamblingtablesandcausinghimtolosemillionsoffrancs.WhileBravanoisberatingMaria,acountfromanold,Italianfamily,VincenzoTorlato-Favrini,approacheshimandgallantlyslapshim,theninvitesMariatoleavewithhim.VincenzorelatesthenextpartofMaria'sstory:Earlierthatsamedaywhenhestopsatagypsyencampmenttogetwaterforhiscar'sradiator,heseesMariadancingandbecomesenchantedbyher.Later,atthecasino,heseesMariathrowmoneyfromabalconytoasupposedgypsyloverbelow.Now,inhiscaroutsidethecasino,Vincenzosurprisesherbyaskinghername,forheseldomseesfilmsandhasnoideathatsheisfamous.Theydrivetohismagnificentvilla,whereVincenzointroduceshertohiswidowedsister,Eleanora.AfterMariaandVincenzofallinlove,Vincenzo,obsessedwithcontinuinghisfamilyhistorybybequeathinganimageofthemascountandcountess,informsEleanorathathewantstomarryMaria.EleanoraisshockedandtellsVincenzothatwouldbesenselesslycruelanddestructivetoMaria.VincenzoisamongthemournersatthecemeteryasHarrycontinuestorelatethelastactofMaria's"Cinderella"-likelife:SixweeksafterMariaandVincenzomet,HarryreturnstoItalytomakeanotherfilm,inwhichMariadoesnotappear.Whentheymeet,MariatellsHarrythatsheisveryhappyandisabouttomarryVincenzo,butconfidesthattheyhavenotyetbeensexuallyintimate.HarrysubstitutesforMaria'sfatherattheweddingceremonybutisuneasy,realizingthatshehasneverreallybeeninlovebefore,herprioramourshavingbeenperfunctory,clandestineaffairswithlessermen.Severalweekspassand,aweekbeforeherdeath,MariavisitsHarry,breaksdownandrelatestheeventsofherweddingnight:Afterbothprofessgreatloveforoneanother,VincenzoconfessesthathewasseverelyinjuredinanexplosionduringWorldWarIIandisunabletohavesexualrelations.MariatellsHarrythatsheintendstomakeVincenzohappybyprovidinghimwithachildtocontinuehisfamilylineandthatsheisalreadypregnant.Harryisalarmedbythenews,butMariatellshimthatsheintendstoendtherelationshipwiththefather,whomsherefusestoidentify,thatnightandtellVincenzoaboutthebabythefollowingday.WhenHarrywatchesMariadriveaway,heseesanothercarfollowher.ConcernedforMaria'ssafety,HarrydrivestothevillabutarrivestoolatetopreventVincenzofromshootingbothMariaandhischauffeur,havingassumedthattheywerehavinganaffair.WhenVincenzoasksHarrywhatheandMariatalkedaboutearlierintheevening,Harrychoosestosaythattheywerejusttalkingoveroldtimes.HarrythenasksVincenzoifMariasaidanythingbeforeheshother.WhenVincenzostatesshedidnot,Harryfallssilent,revealingnothingaboutMaria'spregnancy.Asthefuneralends,therainstopsandthesunilluminatesMaria'sstatueasVincenzoisledawayinpolicecustodyandthemournersdepart.
