大學畢業後做過保鏢的他，因為與1013 Productions的Chris Carter是好朋友，所以在他大部分作品中亮相過，像《X-檔案》（X Files）、《殘酷的國度》（Harsh Realm）和《Millennium》等。
奧奎因從20多歲就開始敗頂，所以他在影視作品中多以光頭形象示人。J.J. Abrams在兩部熱播劇《雙面女間諜》（Alias）和《迷失》（Lost）中都啟用了他，因為先前的合作關係，奧奎因成為《迷失》中少數幾個未經試戲就拍板的演員。
作為一個志向高遠的演員，Terry這位密西根生人在70年代中段花了3個學期的時間在愛荷華學習劇場表演。David Schaal，愛荷華大學劇場表演名譽教授，在看過他的表演之後，用一個獎學金把Terry從密西根中央大學羅致到了自己的麾下。
