《小夜曲》於1973年2月25日在百老匯舒伯特劇院推出，上演了600場，然後展開全美各地的巡迴公演，後來又登上倫敦的舞台。多年以來，這齣戲不斷地被拿出來重新上演。《Send in the Clowns》是本劇最受歡迎的名曲。在本劇中，這首歌出現於第二幕，《Send in the clowns。小丑進場》，劇情是說：一個在舞台上顛倒眾生的紅伶，眼看昔日被她玩弄於股掌間的男士們，個個均安身成家，好面子的她不信自己魅力已失，遂邀請眾伉儷到她的鄉間別墅度假。當她向老情人提出重續前緣時被拒，於是自嘲而又傷感地唱出了這首歌，發人深省、令人動容。
