影片是改編自 Richard Gardner 的故事，故事主人翁 John McCanless 是一個思想特異的79歲怪老頭，他在美國西部有個小農場，然而他那傳統的方式卻讓旁人報以奇怪的眼光，骨瘦如柴的牲口、醜陋不起眼的馬匹，收成也僅能餬口。然而由於一位企業家打算收購土地開發，於是無所不用其及地採取手段來掠奪土地，John McCanless 為了要跟大企業對抗，就在孫女和夥伴的陪同下，帶著他視為寶貴的家當，懷著如同唐吉軻德般的精神，一路浩浩蕩蕩要去跟企業家抗議。後來居然還經歷了一場驚險刺激的槍戰，宛如又重新回到古西部時代的生存法則！
